After a Disaster: Communications and Communicating
  • In many instances during and after a disaster, mobile calls may not be able to go through.
  • However, text messages have a better chance of transmitting, so it may be helpful to teach your children how to text message.
  • It also may be helpful to learn how to send an e-mail from a cell phone, or send e-mail to a cell phone. This establishes another form of communication should you need it.
  • The American Red Cross offers a “Safe and Well List.” This is a communication tool designed to help families and friends know if one another is safe following a disaster. It might be a good idea to teach your children about this list; it will be another way to know if they are all right should a disaster separate you.
