Preparing Identification for Large Animals

Like small animals, large animals should be supplied with adequate identification information before disaster strikes. Should a disaster affect your area, you'll have better chances of reuniting with your animal(s) if you are separated, or if confusion ensues.

Identifying Horses

  • Horses should have identification which includes your name, home address, phone number, out-of-state emergency contact (someone who you will be in contact with before, during, and after a disaster), and if possible, the veterinarian’s name, location, and phone number.
  • Here are some examples of identification for horses:
    • Microchip
    • Tattoo
    • Halter tag
    • Neck collars
    • Leg band
    • Brand
    • Mane clip
    • Luggage tag braided into tail or mane
    • Clipper-shaved information in the animals’ hair
    • Livestock marking crayon, non-toxic, non-water-soluble spray pain, or non-water-soluble markers to write on animals’ side
    • Permanent marker to mark hooves

Identifying Livestock

  • Identification information for livestock should include the same data listed above (directly under "Identifying Horses").
  • Examples of identification for livestock:
    • Neck chain
    • Ear notches
    • Leg band
    • Ear tag
    • Brand
    • Livestock marking crayon, non-toxic, non-water-soluble spray pain, or non-water-soluble markers to write on animals’ side
    • Wattle notching
    • Ear tattoo
    • Back or tail tag
