Pet-Friendly Shelters: What You Need to Know

Pet-friendly shelters are typically uncommon in most areas, so if staying in one is part of your disaster plan, research them now. This should be a pet owner's last resort: space will fill up quickly and it will be crowded.

  • Most counties require that you pre-register your pet at the pet-friendly shelter you plan to stay at. Visit your county's web site for more information about your local pet-friendly shelter(s). Pet-friendly shelter space will be very limited, so it is recommended that you pre-register as soon as possible.
  • Ask your county's animal services personnel about the pet-friendly shelter- what supplies should you bring? What documents must you have onhand? Make sure that you ask about what vaccinations your animal will need to have, and obtain proper documentation and tags to bring with you to the shelter.
  • When you evacuate to the shelter, don't forget pet supplies, making sure to remember identification, essential medicines, food, water, sanitary items, pet tags, and proper records. Contact your county for a complete list of what you'll need to bring with you to the location, but know that each pet will need a cage or crate, county/city tags, and proof of vaccination.
