Preparing Your Aquarium for a Hurricane
  • If you have an aquarium, especially a large one, you will need to take special preparations for the loss of power. Be concerned about three things:
    1. Keeping the water oxygenated so the fish can breathe.
    2. Removing the waste that the fish produce.
    3. Keeping the tank’s water at the right temperature, especially if the fish are tropical.
  • A generator can be a costly option for an alternate power source, but also consider battery-operated air pumps that you can rig up a filtering system to. However, finding a way to keep the tank at a constant temperature should be your biggest challenge.
  • The day before, take these steps:
    1. Change the water and clean the tank.
    2. Do not feed the fish much, if at all.
    3. Prepare for the power going out, and if it does, put your backup plan in place.
  • Note: Check with a fish expert to see what other precautions you can take when planning for disaster. Know that different types of fish will have different needs.
