Your Small Pet Evacuation Kit

Know that if you evacuate to a shelter, you can bring very limited supplies. Contact your county about what you can bring with you to a pet-friendly shelter. If you evacuate elsewhere, here is a list of recommended items to put in your small pet evacuation kit. It will be a smaller, but still adequate, version of what is in your pet emergency supply kit.

  • Each animal must have a cage or crate that is well-ventilated, making sure that the animal has adequate space. However, oversized cages and crates are not recommended, as space may be limited.
  • Bring a leash, collar, and/or harness for each pet. Make sure that proper identification is attached to the animal and attached to the crate.
  • Bring at least a 3-day supply of food, water, and treats.
  • Bring a small and adequate version of your small pet's first aid kit.
  • Don't forget copies of medical records, ownership papers, and other important documents. Note that your animal must have the proper vaccinations to stay at various places- so make sure you have a copy of these vaccinations and appropriate tags, if applicable.
  • Bring at least a week's supply of medicines that your pet will need. Remember ones that you may store in other places, like the refrigerator.
  • Bring familiar items to place in your animal's cage or crate to help reduce stress.
  • Make sure to bring pictures of you and your pet together in case of separation or confusion.
Include proper sanitation items that your pet will need, like litter boxes, paper towels, anti-bacterial wipes.
  • Remember your sheet of important emergency contacts.
